Topdressing is the practice of spreading a thin, even layer of compost, sand, or a blended mix directly over existing turf. It's one of the most effective — and underutilized — lawn care practices available, and it's been used on golf courses and athletic fields for decades.

We use a commercial topdressing spreader to apply material evenly at ¼ to ½ inch depth across the entire lawn, avoiding clumping.

A drag mat or broom works the material into the aeration holes and existing turf, ensuring full contact with the soil surface.

Overseeding (Optional)

Turf Topdressing FAQ
When is the best time to topdress a lawn in Ohio?
Fall (late August through October) is the ideal window for cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue, which are most common in western Ohio. The cooler temperatures and fall rains help the material work in quickly. Spring (April–May) is the second-best option, especially when combined with overseeding.
How thick should the topdressing layer be?
We apply between ¼ and ½ inch — thin enough that it doesn't smother existing grass, thick enough to make a meaningful impact on soil structure. Applying too much at once can block sunlight and kill turf, so we always err on the conservative side and recommend annual applications rather than one heavy treatment.
Do I need to aerate before topdressing?
Aeration is not strictly required, but it dramatically improves results. Core aeration creates channels that allow the topdressing material to reach the root zone directly. Without aeration, most of the benefit stays at the surface. We almost always recommend combining the two services for maximum impact.
Will topdressing fix bare spots and low areas in my lawn?
Topdressing is excellent for leveling minor low spots (under 1 inch deep). For deeper depressions, we may recommend a targeted fill-and-seed approach first. Bare spots respond well to topdressing combined with overseeding — the material protects the seed and keeps it moist during germination.
How soon will I see results?
Soil structure improvements happen gradually over one to two growing seasons. However, if you combine topdressing with overseeding, you'll see new grass germination within 10–21 days. Thatch reduction is typically noticeable by the following spring. Most homeowners see a visibly thicker, healthier lawn within one full growing season.
