Most retaining wall failures come down to one thing: inadequate drainage. When water builds up behind a wall, the hydrostatic pressure eventually overcomes even a well-built structure. We install drainage aggregate and perforated pipe at the base of every wall we build — not as an optional upgrade, but as a standard part of every installation.

How We Build Walls That Last
Every retaining wall project follows a proven process that addresses the most common causes of wall failure before the first block is set.

Site Assessment
We evaluate slope grade, soil conditions, drainage patterns, and the height and length of wall needed to determine the right system and materials.

Engineering & Design
For walls over 4 feet, we design the wall system with proper batter, base depth, drainage aggregate, and geogrid reinforcement as required by engineering standards.

Excavation & Base Prep
Proper base preparation is the foundation of a long-lasting wall. We excavate to the correct depth, compact the base, and install drainage aggregate before the first course is set.

Wall Construction
Each course is set level, with proper batter (backward lean), drainage aggregate backfill, and geogrid reinforcement at specified intervals for engineered walls.

Drainage & Backfill
Drainage pipe is installed at the base of the wall and outlets are established to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup — the most common cause of retaining wall failure.

Cap & Finish
Cap stones or cap blocks are set to complete the wall, and the surrounding area is graded, seeded or sodded, and cleaned up to leave the site looking finished.

How tall can a retaining wall be without engineering?
In most cases, walls up to 3–4 feet in height can be built without a formal engineering stamp, though this varies by municipality and site conditions. Walls over 4 feet typically require engineered design with geogrid reinforcement. We design all walls to meet or exceed applicable standards regardless of height.
What causes retaining walls to fail?
The most common causes of retaining wall failure are inadequate drainage (hydrostatic pressure buildup behind the wall), insufficient base depth, lack of geogrid reinforcement on taller walls, and poor compaction of backfill. Our installation process addresses all of these failure points.
How long does a retaining wall last?
