Design Before You Dig

Your Landscape Should Look Like It Was Planned — Because It Was

Too many landscapes are assembled over time — a shrub here, a flower bed there — without a unifying plan. The result looks busy, unbalanced, and never quite finished. A proper landscape design changes that. It gives your property a clear vision, a plant palette that works together, and a layout that makes sense for how you live.

Kristi Post studied Horticulture Science at Ohio State University's Agricultural Technical Institute, while Dan Post studied Nursery Management. Together, they bring formal training in plant science, design principles, and Ohio-specific growing conditions to every project — not just an eye for what looks nice, but a deep understanding of what will actually thrive on your property.

What You Get

What Our Design Process Includes

Every design project is different, but these are the core elements we bring to every landscape plan.

Site Analysis

We evaluate your property's sun exposure, soil conditions, drainage patterns, existing vegetation, views, and how you use your outdoor spaces — the foundation of every design decision.

Scaled Planting Plan

A detailed, to-scale drawing showing the exact placement of all plants, beds, lawn areas, and hardscape elements. You'll see exactly what your finished landscape will look like before a single plant goes in the ground.

Plant Selection

We select plants specifically suited to western Ohio's climate, your soil type, sun and shade conditions, and your maintenance preferences. Every plant is chosen to thrive — not just survive.

Layered Design

Great landscapes have structure at every level — canopy trees, understory trees, shrubs, perennials, ground covers, and lawn. We design with layering in mind so your landscape looks full and intentional from day one.

Seasonal Interest

We plan for year-round color and texture — spring bulbs and flowering trees, summer perennials, fall color, and winter structure from evergreens and ornamental grasses.

Curb Appeal & Function

Good design balances beauty with practicality. We consider traffic flow, privacy screening, views from inside the home, and how the landscape frames your house from the street.

The PEL Difference

Formally Trained. Locally Experienced.

There's a difference between someone who has installed a lot of landscapes and someone who has studied the science behind why plants grow where they do. Kristi's education in Horticulture Science from OSU-ATI means she understands plant physiology, soil science, and design principles at a level that goes beyond on-the-job experience.

That training, combined with 20+ years of actually installing landscapes in western Ohio, means you get a design that's not only beautiful on paper — but one that will grow, thrive, and look better every year.

Our Process

From First Conversation to Finished Landscape

Our design-build process keeps your project in one set of hands from concept through completion.

01

Initial Consultation

We meet at your property to walk the site, understand your vision, discuss your budget, and learn how you want to use your outdoor spaces. This conversation shapes everything that follows.

02

Site Assessment

We measure the property, assess soil and drainage, document existing plants and structures, and photograph the site from key vantage points to inform the design.

03

Concept Design

We develop a concept plan showing the overall layout — bed shapes, lawn areas, focal points, and major plant groupings. You review and provide feedback before we move to the detailed plan.

04

Detailed Planting Plan

The final scaled plan specifies every plant by name, size, and quantity, with exact placement shown. You receive a complete plant list with photos so you know exactly what you're getting.

05

Installation Proposal

We provide a detailed installation quote based on the approved design. Because we design and install, there's no handoff — the same team that designed your landscape installs it.

06

Installation

Our crew installs your landscape exactly as designed. We source quality plant material, prepare soil properly, and take care of every detail so the finished result matches the plan.

Common Questions

Landscape Design FAQs

Do I need a design before you can install my landscape?

For smaller, straightforward projects — like adding a few foundation shrubs or a simple flower bed — we can often work from a brief consultation and general direction. For larger projects involving significant bed areas, multiple plant layers, or hardscape integration, a proper design ensures the finished result is cohesive and intentional rather than assembled piece by piece.

How much does landscape design cost?

Design fees vary based on property size and project complexity. Many clients find that investing in a proper design actually saves money by eliminating costly mistakes — planting the wrong plant in the wrong place, or having to redo a layout that doesn't work. We discuss design fees during the initial consultation.

What makes your design approach different?

Kristi Post holds a degree from Ohio State University's Agricultural Technical Institute in Horticulture Science. She brings formal training in plant science, design principles, and Ohio-specific growing conditions to every project — not just an eye for what looks nice, but a deep understanding of what will actually grow and thrive on your property.

Can you work with my existing landscape?

Absolutely! Many of our design projects involve renovating or expanding an existing landscape — keeping what's working, removing what isn't, and adding new elements to create a more cohesive, intentional result. We'll assess what you have and make honest recommendations about what to keep, transplant, or replace.

What plants do you recommend for western Ohio?

Western Ohio's USDA Hardiness Zone 5b–6a climate supports a wide range of trees, shrubs, and perennials. We favor plants with proven performance in our region — native species like Ohio spiderwort, coneflower, and serviceberry alongside proven ornamentals like ornamental grasses, hydrangeas, and flowering trees. We always prioritize plants that will thrive with minimal intervention.

Do you offer maintenance plans after installation?

Yes, we do offer ongoing maintenance services after installation for an annual fee.
