A Well-Built Pond Is One of the Best Investments You Can Make in Your Property

A properly designed and constructed pond provides water for livestock, habitat for wildlife, recreation for your family, and beauty for your property — for generations. A poorly built pond leaks, silts in, and becomes a maintenance headache. The difference is in the design and the construction.

Post Excavating & Landscaping LLC has been building ponds throughout western Ohio for over 20 years. We understand the local soil conditions, the watershed characteristics, and the regulatory requirements. We design and build ponds that hold water, manage overflow safely, and look beautiful in the landscape.

We also restore old ponds — dredging accumulated sediment, repairing outlets, and stabilizing banks. If you have an old pond that has silted in or is no longer holding water, we can often restore it for less than the cost of a new pond.

Pond Types

Every Type of Pond, Built Right

Farm & Livestock Ponds

Ponds designed and excavated to provide reliable water for livestock, irrigation, and fire suppression. We size the pond based on your watershed, soil type, and water demand.

Recreational Fishing Ponds

Ponds designed for fishing and recreation, with proper depth profiles, inlet/outlet structures, and fish-friendly features. We can advise on stocking and management as well.

Decorative & Landscape Ponds

Smaller ornamental ponds and water features integrated into landscape designs. These add beauty and value to residential properties and can be combined with waterfalls, fountains, and plantings.

Retention & Detention Ponds

Stormwater management ponds designed to capture and slowly release runoff, reducing downstream flooding and improving water quality. Often required for commercial and residential developments.

Pond Restoration & Dredging

Existing ponds cleaned out, reshaped, and fully restored. Silt and sediment removed, banks stabilized, and outlets repaired. We can bring an old pond back to full working capacity.

Dam & Spillway Construction

Earthen dams and concrete spillways constructed to retain water and manage overflow safely. Proper dam and spillway design is critical for long-term pond performance.

Our Process

How We Build a Pond

01

Site Evaluation

We walk the site, evaluate the watershed, assess soil conditions, and discuss your goals for the pond.

02

Design & Permitting

We design the pond to meet your needs and advise on any permit requirements before construction begins.

03

Excavation

The basin is excavated to the design depth and shape, with proper attention to the dam, inlet, and outlet structures.

04

Finishing & Seeding

Banks are shaped and stabilized, the outlet structure is installed, and disturbed areas are seeded to prevent erosion.

Common Questions

Pond Construction FAQ

How big should my farm pond be?

Pond size depends on your watershed area, soil type, and intended use. A general rule of thumb is that a pond needs at least 3–5 acres of watershed per surface acre of pond to maintain water levels in dry years. We evaluate your specific site and recommend an appropriate size during the consultation.

Do I need a permit to build a pond in Ohio?

In Ohio, ponds that involve filling or altering wetlands, or that are connected to navigable waters, may require permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and/or Ohio EPA. Most farm ponds on upland sites do not require permits, but we always advise checking with the relevant agencies before construction. We're familiar with the local requirements and will advise you.

What soil type is best for a pond?

Clay soils hold water well and are ideal for pond construction. Sandy or gravelly soils may require a clay liner or synthetic liner to prevent seepage. We evaluate the soil during the site visit and advise on the best approach for your specific conditions.

How long does it take to build a pond?

A typical farm pond of 1–3 acres can be excavated in one to two weeks, depending on soil conditions and site access. Larger ponds or ponds requiring significant earthwork take longer. We provide a time estimate along with the cost estimate.

Can you restore an old pond that has silted in?

Yes. Pond restoration is a significant part of our pond work. We can dredge accumulated sediment, reshape the basin, repair or replace the outlet structure, and stabilize the banks. In many cases, restoring an existing pond is more cost-effective than building a new one.
