Hydro-Seeding
Landscaping Services
Fast, uniform lawn establishment for new construction, slopes, and large open areas — at a fraction of the cost of sod.
Why Hydro-Seeding?
Hydro-seeding is the professional's choice for establishing grass quickly and economically across large or difficult areas. A specially formulated slurry of seed, wood fiber mulch, fertilizer, and tackifier is sprayed in a single pass — creating ideal germination conditions that consistently outperform dry seeding.
At Post Excavating & Landscaping, we've been hydro-seeding Ohio and Indiana properties since 2004. Our ODA Pesticides certification means we apply the right seed blends and soil amendments for your specific conditions — not a one-size-fits-all approach.

How It Works
The hydro-seeding slurry is a carefully balanced mixture of four key components that work together to create the ideal germination environment:
Seed: We select grass varieties suited to Ohio's climate and your specific site — sun/shade tolerance, traffic resistance, and drought hardiness all factor in.
Wood Fiber Mulch: Acts as a moisture-retaining blanket that keeps seeds in contact with soil, moderates temperature extremes, and prevents surface crusting.
Starter Fertilizer: Provides the immediate nutrients young seedlings need to establish strong root systems in the first critical weeks.
Tackifier: A bonding agent that adheres the slurry to slopes and uneven terrain, preventing washout during rain events before germination occurs.

Where We Apply It
From new home lots to large commercial sites, hydro-seeding is the most versatile and cost-effective lawn establishment method available.
New Home Construction
Establish thick, uniform turf on freshly graded lots faster than traditional seeding — with far less erosion risk during the critical establishment window.
Slopes & Embankments
The tackifier in our slurry mix bonds seed to steep slopes, holding everything in place through rain events while germination takes hold.
Large Open Areas
Hydro-seeding covers acres efficiently and economically — ideal for fields, pastures, roadsides, and large residential lots where sod would be cost-prohibitive.
Post-Excavation Restoration
After site work, land clearing, or pond construction, hydro-seeding quickly restores disturbed ground to a healthy, vegetated state.
Overseeding Thin Turf
Revive patchy, worn-out lawns with a targeted hydro-seed application that fills bare spots and thickens existing turf without full renovation.
Roadside & Ditch Stabilization
Municipalities and contractors rely on hydro-seeding to quickly vegetate road shoulders, drainage ditches, and utility corridors.
Why Post Excavating & Landscaping
Hydro-seeding looks simple, but the difference between a thick, even lawn and a patchy failure comes down to seed selection, soil preparation, application rate, and aftercare. Our ODA Pesticides certification and 20+ years of experience in western Ohio's clay-heavy soils mean we get it right the first time.
ODA Pesticides certified applicators — not just equipment operators

Our Process
Every hydro-seeding project follows the same proven process — no shortcuts, no guesswork.
01
Site Assessment
We evaluate your soil type, slope, drainage patterns, and sun exposure to select the right seed blend and application rate for your specific conditions.
02
Soil Preparation
Proper germination starts with good soil contact. We address compaction, grade irregularities, and pH issues before any seed goes down.
03
Custom Slurry Mix
We blend the right seed varieties, wood fiber mulch, fertilizer, and tackifier into a single slurry calibrated for your site's needs.
04
Application
Our hydroseeder applies the slurry in an even, overlapping pattern that ensures complete coverage — no bare spots, no thin areas.
05
Aftercare Guidance
You receive clear watering instructions and a timeline for what to expect. We're available to answer questions as your lawn establishes.
Making the Right Choice
Not every lawn establishment method is right for every situation. Here's how they compare.
| Factor | Hydro-seeding | Sod | Dry seeding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Low–Medium | High | Lowest |
| Time to usable lawn | 4–6 weeks | Immediate | 6–10 weeks |
| Slope performance | Excellent | Good | Poor |
| Large area coverage | Excellent | Expensive | Good |
| Germination rate | High | N/A (instant) | Variable |
| Soil bonding | Excellent (tackifier) | Good (roots) | Poor |
| Seed variety options | Unlimited | Limited | Unlimited |
Common Questions
Most grass species germinate within 7–14 days under normal conditions. Full coverage typically develops within 3–5 weeks, depending on weather, watering, and seed variety.
Hydro-seeding costs significantly less than sod — typically 50–80% less for large areas. The tradeoff is time: sod gives you instant turf, while hydro-seeding requires a 4–6 week establishment period. For new construction and large areas, hydro-seeding is almost always the better value.
Late summer to early fall (mid-August through September) is ideal for cool-season grasses in Ohio — soil is warm, air temperatures are moderate, and fall rains support germination. Spring (April–May) is the second-best window. We can hydro-seed in summer with proper irrigation.
Yes — consistent moisture is critical for the first 3–4 weeks. We recommend light, frequent watering (2–3 times daily for short durations) to keep the mulch mat moist without washing it away. We provide a full aftercare sheet with every job.
Absolutely! The tackifier in our slurry mix is specifically designed to bond the seed and mulch to slopes, making hydro-seeding one of the best options for steep embankments where erosion is a concern.
