How long do paver patios last in Ohio's climate?

Properly installed paver patios routinely last 25–50 years in Ohio's climate. The key is the base — a well-compacted gravel and sand base allows individual pavers to flex slightly during freeze-thaw cycles without cracking. Unlike poured concrete, which can crack as a single slab, individual pavers move independently and can be replaced if needed.

What's the difference between pavers and stamped concrete?

Both are popular choices, but they behave very differently over time. Stamped concrete is poured as a single slab, which means if it cracks (and Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles will eventually cause cracking), the repair is difficult to hide. Pavers are individual units — if one is damaged, you replace just that piece. Pavers also offer more design flexibility and tend to look better as they age.

Do I need a permit for a paver patio in Ohio?

In most rural and small-town areas of Mercer County, a permit is not required for a ground-level patio. However, if the project involves retaining walls over 4 feet, steps, or is within a floodplain, permits may apply. We're familiar with local regulations and will advise you during the consultation.

How do I maintain a paver patio?

Paver patios are very low maintenance. Annual or bi-annual re-sanding of joints helps prevent weed growth and ant infiltration. Sealing every 3–5 years protects against staining and keeps colors vibrant. Individual pavers that shift or crack can be lifted and reset without disturbing the rest of the surface.

Can you install pavers over an existing concrete slab?

In some cases, yes — pavers can be installed over an existing concrete slab if the slab is in good condition and properly sloped for drainage. However, this approach adds height and may create issues at doorways or transitions. We evaluate each situation individually and recommend the best approach for long-term performance.

How much does a paver patio cost?

Paver patio costs vary based on size, paver material, site conditions, and design complexity. Concrete pavers are the most affordable option; natural stone is at the higher end.
